Today Show Babywearing Segment

Have any of you seen the babywearing coverage on the Today Show? I have to say that the portion on the recall was impartial and very accurate. I also have to say…..LOVE the Moby, Boba and Ergo. (of course). I was a little disappointed that they didn’t show any babies in cradle hold or breastfeeding friendly positions. They also failed to cover how to safely wear a newborn. Those small observations aside, I am fairly pleased with the segment and I think it represented babywearing in a positive light.

I started wearing my newborn one day before the government warning was issued. Suddenly both of my parents (who know little about AP) contacted me independently all freaked out about me carrying her in the sling even though my Maya Wrap was not one of the slings recalled. Glad to see this balanced coverage.

I heard about the recall from my parents too. Babywearing might not be mainstream but the recall news sure was. :) I wish they would have included a ring sling and a safe pouch.

We were glad that they showed some safe carriers, as well. We also thought they could do better! We responded to the piece, as well: http://www.becomingmamas.com/?p=96

I agree it’s great that babywearing is getting some positive press. They could have done a bit more to tell the difference between the Bjorn and Ergo/Booba. In case you don’t know the difference is that the Bjorn puts all the weight and pressure on the baby’s spine. The Ergo/Booba (or whatever that one after the Ergo was) supports the whole butt and hips, so that it’s not possibly bad for the baby’s spine like the Bjorn.

I would have to bet that they didn’t cover slings because they don’t even know that those 2 recalled ones were not really slings at all. They were basically duffel bags with seat belts. That’s not even close to what a ring sling or pouch sling is. THEY HAD SEAT BELTS!
