Formula Fed America Trailer -Now THIS I have GOT to See!
This is the trailer for a new documentary on formula feeding in America. The documentary which is in the process of filming and scheduled to wrap in April of 2010 explores the prevalence of formula feeding in North America and the health implications that follow.
According to the Formula Fed America Documentary website ,
“Why are we ignoring our natural biological function of breastfeeding? Why are doctors, who more often than not agree that breast milk is far superior to infant formula, so quick to prescribe it when a mother experiences difficulty breastfeeding? Why do we continue to sexualize the breast and stigmatize its actual and intended use? Why are there not more widely available human milk banks where a mother can go and receive that precious liquid gold for her baby rather than free cans of formula our mailboxes? If infant feeding is a choice, why are we not making an informed one? This documentary will provide an insightful look into our culture’s attitude towards the breastfeeding mother and its acceptance of infant formula.”
Thanks to Dou-la-la’s blog for the heads up on the trailer.

Exacltly my opinion! Breast feeding is something natural and every mother who can breastfeed her child should do that. I’m not yet a mother myself but I’m convinced that I’d want my child to be breastfed as much as possible. I think it’s an important part of creating bonds between mother and child.

More recent news from the medical community now suggests that, in terms of nutritional value, formula is comparable to breast milk. I’m not a conspiracy theorist but just at at time when major pharmaseutical companies are pushing improved formula we see this announcment from medical researchers. Coincidence? Anyway, when it comes to bonding, I think bottle feeding comes a distant second.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says babies should be breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months. Beyond that, the AAP encourages breastfeeding until at least 12 months, and longer if both the mother and baby are willing.

that is alarming since we all know that the human milk contains minerals and vitamins no other formulated milk can provide. as far as i know when a mother is choosing to breast feed her baby it is one way of giving the right sustenance and antibodies that the baby need in order to survive.

My children go breast fed and worked just fine. the simple truth is there is 4 billion dollars at stake here with the baby formula industry. This is the real menace to this issue.

My sister gave birth to her second child about 3 months ago and was told that due to an infection she had while pregnant she would be unable to breast feed. As a result she has had to use a formula. It wasn’t what she wanted but unfortunately there wasn’t much choice for her in the end. I look forward to seeing the documentary.

My wife breast fed all 3 of our children (who are now all grown up). Back 20 odd years ago there was not a lot of formula options even if you wanted them. I guess in the case Beth pointed out above there is a place for using formula but we never thought twice about the issue when raising our babies…

Imagine how much formula it takes to feed an infant for an entire year. Add that to the cost of bottles, rubber nipples, cleaning utensils, and the water used to sterilize equipment and mix with formula. In response to the above, stress does not prevent women from making milk for their babies, and breastfeeding women should not be given any infant formula or powdered milk. It is usually easier to digest than formula, so breastfed babies are less likely to be colicky. Breast milk can help babies sleep more peacefully. For example, between 50-75% of the iron in breastmilk is absorbed whereas only about 4% of the iron in formula is. Since less nutrients are absorbed from formula, the nutrients are passed through your baby’s digestive system as waste (explaining why the stools of formula fed babies smell while those of breastfed babies do not) and may over-tax the waste-disposal system of formula-fed babies. Breast milk is way different from infant formula. Colostrum, the thick yellow first breast milk that you make during pregnancy and just after birth, will give your baby the best start at life – no question.
